Aaron A. Romney is a shareholder and partner with Zeisler & Zeisler. His practice is focused on the representation of individuals and businesses involved in complex financial litigation or facing complex financial challenges, including: commercial litigation, creditor/debtor litigation, bankruptcy, insurance coverage, securities and investment disputes, and foreclosure matters. He routinely guides clients through all stages of high-stakes litigation, has successfully tried cases before Connecticut’s state and federal courts, and has successfully arbitrated investment disputes before the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (“FINRA”). Aaron approaches every engagement with an eye toward achieving clients’ goals in the most practical, cost-effective and efficient manner, but he will try any case where the circumstances require it.
Upon graduation from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 2008, Aaron served at the Connecticut Appellate Court as judicial clerk to the Honorable Justice Francis M. McDonald, retired Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court, and the Honorable Robert I. Berdon, retired Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.Aaron has been selected for membership into the Fairfield County Chapter of the American Inns of Court, a prestigious organization of lawyers and judges whose mission is to foster excellence in professionalism, ethics, civility, and legal skills.
Co-lead counsel to a former broker-dealer against other industry participants in a FINRA arbitration arising out of a fraudulent securities transaction that resulted in an award exceeding $1.6 million in the client’s favor.
Co-lead trial counsel to a surgical practice and its principal against their former landlord. Successfully defeated the landlord’s multi-million dollar claim for rent due to constructive eviction and obtained a net-judgment in the client’s favor exceeding $800,000 due to the landlord’s grossly negligent conduct.
Successfully represented a registered person in a FINRA arbitration against a broker-dealer with which she had been registered by obtaining expungement of the defamatory grounds for her alleged termination that had been reported on her FINRA Broker-Check Report.
Co-lead counsel to a defunct securities broker-dealer in a FINRA arbitration against its former clearing firm that resulted in an award exceeding $8 million in the client’s favor, including an award of attorney’s fees and prejudgment interest.
Lead special litigation counsel to Chapter 7 Trustee of an affiliate to a syndicate of investment vehicles, obtaining a settlement that made available to the estate nearly $3 million and resulted in full payment to creditors after the estate was originally believed to have no assets.
Member of the litigation team retained by Chapter 7 Trustee of a large Connecticut Ponzi Scheme that resulted in investor losses exceeding $30 million. Drafted the Trustee’s Motion for Summary Judgment in an adversary proceeding, which prompted a settlement with over 40 defendants exceeding $7 million of value to the bankruptcy estate.
Represented large Connecticut-based developer in a variety of matters arising out of the financial crisis and related decline in real estate markets.
Represented Chapter 7 Trustee of a defunct technology company in prosecution of the estate’s largest asset, a legal malpractice claim against a New Mexico law firm. After successfully defeating the defendant’s summary judgment motion, the case settled on the eve of a five-day jury trial for 97.5% of the defendant’s $2 million insurance policy.
Represented sub-contractor on a Connecticut state funded construction project in a dispute against general contractor. Successfully prosecuted claims and defeated all counterclaims after overseeing all aspects of litigation from inception through trial and successful defense of appeal.
Successfully defended through trial Chapter 7 debtor accused of obtaining money through false pretenses, false representation or actual fraud.
